What do silverfish look like?

Silverfish are silvery metallic bugs that have flat bodies that taper from head to rear, resembling a teardrop or fish. Typically, they are covered in scales. Minus their antennae and appendages, adult silverfish are approximately ½ - 1 inch in length.

Do silverfish fly?

Silverfish do not have wings, and therefore cannot fly. They move their bodies in a wiggling manner that resembles the movement of fish.

Are silverfish harmful to humans?

Silverfish are not harmful to humans or pets. They are not known to bite and do not spread disease.

Do silverfish cause damage?

Silverfish may damage books, fabrics, wallpaper, and stored food, as well as other items that contain starches.

Why do silverfish come indoors?

Like many other insects, silverfish often enter homes and structures in search of food. They are also brought indoors by accident inside boxes and on infested items.

What else attracts silverfish?

Silverfish prefer dark, damp areas such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, attics, and basements, as well as other areas with high humidity.

How do silverfish enter homes?

Silverfish enter homes and other structures through foundation cracks, gaps around doors and windows, garage doors left open, and other cracks, gaps, and openings on the exterior.

What do silverfish eat?

When they infest homes and structures, silverfish feed on paper, glue, wallpaper, fabrics, dead insects, and foodstuffs including flour, oats, and cereals.

Do essential oils work to get rid of silverfish?

Supposedly, essential oils like peppermint, rosemary, and cedar will deter silverfish, and in high enough doses some essentials are said to kill silverfish if exposed long enough. As is the case with many DIY pest control methods, there’s room for error. The best way to eliminate silverfish and other insects from a home or business is to contact a pest control company.
