What do German cockroaches look like?

German cockroaches are small and light brown to tan in color, with two dark stripes running down their back. Adults range in size ½ to 5/8 inch long. Although they have wings, they rarely fly.

Are German cockroaches harmful?

Like American cockroaches, German roaches can carry and transmit bacteria and illness, contaminate food, and trigger allergies in some people.

Can German cockroaches infest clean homes?

Unfortunately, yes. Although a clean home can help deter roach infestations, they are not exempt from cockroach problems. German cockroaches often enter homes and buildings on bags and boxes or, if there’s a way in, they’ll exploit it in order to find food and water sources.

Where are German cockroaches commonly found?

German cockroaches prefer warm and humid environments, so it only makes sense that they’ll often show up in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens, as well as crawl spaces and other areas where favorable conditions are found.

What do German cockroaches eat?

German cockroaches are well-documented scavengers and consume a variety of foods, even non-food items. Starchy, sugary foods, and grease are favorites, but toothpaste, hair, leather, and book bindings are just as likely to be consumed by these opportunistic insects.

How fast do German cockroaches reproduce?

German cockroaches reproduce rather quickly (an entire life cycle takes about 100 days to complete) and continuously. In fact, in a single infestation there may be many overlapping generations present at one time.

What are some signs of a German cockroach infestation?

If you’re concerned that your home or business has been infested by German cockroaches, keep an eye out for the following signs:

  •  Live cockroaches
  • Cockroach droppings (small, dark, cylindrical pellets)
  • Egg cases
In some cases, property owners may detect a musty odor

Is it hard to get rid of German cockroaches on your own?

Cockroach infestations are very difficult to eliminate without the help of a pest control company because these insects are very good at hiding, they breed quickly, and may not respond to DIY pest treatments. The best way to exterminate a cockroach problem is to seek help from professional exterminators.
