Are camel crickets harmful?

Camel crickets are not considered harmful to humans. They do not bite or sting, and are not known to carry diseases. They are often considered a nuisance when they gather in large numbers inside homes, and may damage fabrics and houseplants.

Where are camel crickets found?

Camel crickets are usually found in dark and damp environments, that’s why homeowners often find them in their basements and crawlspaces, as well as garages, sheds, and other outbuildings.

What do camel crickets eat?

Camel crickets feed on a variety of organic matter including animal products, plants, and other insects. They also have a habit of eating curtains, clothing, and other fabrics when they infest homes.

Can camel crickets jump?

They sure can and are known for their jumping abilities. They use their powerful hind legs to propel themselves.

Are camel crickets the same as regular crickets?

Not only are camel crickets in an entirely different family, they have distinct physical differences, namely their humpbacks and longer legs. They also do not make the chirping sounds associated with other types of crickets. In fact, they’re generally silent.

How do camel crickets get in the house?

As is the case with ants, silverfish, and other house-infesting insects, camel crickets exploit cracks, gaps, and openings on the exterior of the home to get inside. Property owners may also inadvertently bring them inside on boxes and other items.

Is it hard to get rid of camel crickets on your own?

Eliminating the camel crickets you notice in your home is only half the battle. If you do not address the root cause of the infestation, you’re likely to see camel crickets (and other pests) continue to be a problem indoors.
